okies... yeah! i got back before anyone else did!!
William (Bill) Drummond (1585 - 1649)
he was a hereditary poet (his mother was the sister of the Court Poet). He became laird of Hawthornden with his fathers death. This gave him time to study languages, and collect over 550 books by both Scots and English poets. He donated this collection to Edinburgh University.
He was a poet, especially known for his sonnets (particularly the final couplet). He tried to remain outwith politics, however refused "to ravage and plunder the more peaceable neighbours about". He sympathised with Montrose, and wrote 'Irene', a plea for peace. He is regarded as the first Scots poet to write in English, and decends from old Scots Court poetry.
People looked to Drummond as an idol, and wished for his lifestyle.

Very impressive... unfortunately it makes the correct answer look a bit pathetic now. The Bill Drummond I'm looking for is still alive...
