I've got a copy of "When did you last see your father?” What, if anything, do want to know about it?

Wow, that's great. Well, you've read the blurb- how would you sum it up in a few words? Is it a funny book, or is it meant to be read seriously?

Bugger, you've put me on the spot as it's a while since I've read it! However I do remember thinking that it seemed stuck between the two and neither really won. Not laugh out loud funny nor in depth enough to be used as a serious reference. I'll scan through it again and get back to you in the next day or so.

Right…

I’ve had a look through both books (yes, I’m the one who bought them!) and here are a few notes…

When Did You Last See Your Father?
This was a disappointment as I’d bought it thinking that it would be a comic take on the perils and pitfalls of parenthood. The laughs were few and far between and the ‘serious’ content did not make the grade as a reference work. I read it once and started reading it again some years later but gave up after a few chapters. I don’t know where it was meant to be pitched but wherever it was, it missed.

Jeremy Hardy Speaks To The Nation.
This is a series of transcripts of broadcasts that Jeremy did for Radio 4. This book was quite funny but nowhere near as funny as the original programmes. I think this says more about Jeremy’s skill as a performer than anything else. Maybe I’d have found it funnier if I hadn’t heard the original shows.

Hope this helps.

You can listen to some extracts of a couple of Jeremy's shows. I imagine they are probably funnier heard than read. As I said, the entry's up for subbing now, so it partly depends on whether I can add this new information into the text and partly on who I get doing the subbing and how patient they are prepared to be, but thanks for the info, much appreciated.smiley - biggrin

It was a pleasure. It's the first time I've contributed in any way, shape, or form so it help me to take the plunge.

Thanks

Well I'm glad to have been of service. Some people spend ages ing in peer review before they start contributing, but don't worry too much, as long as you're not too severe any comment is useful.
