Having been to Yate, I would really like to say that I could add lots of interesting info to the Entry, but honestly I'm not sure that I can. smiley - erm

Take out the Liff quote, please. It just looks silly and out-of-place.

I see nothing wrong with a very brief Entry, as Yate merits, but time will tell...

Personally I'd say the Liff quote was the only thing worth keeping in this entry.

Having never knowingly been to Yate, I find it hard to believe there is nothing positive to be said about the place - no history, no geography, no architecture.

This line "Yate folks aren't all friendly. A large number of teenagers are 'chavs' and a fair amount are goths or emos. The others can be generally nice people " is totally unwanted - a young girl lost her life recently because someone decided that hitting Goths was an acceptable pastime.

Sorry Matt - that's come across very aggressively - I didn't mean it that way.

However I find little to redeem the entry.

I'll reread this when I'm not so tired.

At this hour my perception may be unfair, but it just seems that the town is getting a relentless slamming. It may be deserved for all I know and certainly we have our share of towns on the do-not-recommend list. But people do live there. Isn't there one unreservedly good thing to say about the place?

The reason I ask is because the time will come when some hapless hootooer wearing a t-shirt will pass through and could be made to pay for this.

It actually happened that the entire state of Wyoming received very poor treatment from the BikeCentennial Guide back in, well, back in 1976 and cyclers have had a hard time there since.

I think what I'm asking is whether there's a good note to end on, that's all.

As for the rest, well - it is quite funny and well written. as usual, of course.

a large leisure centre, you get the idea.

a large leisure centre - you get the idea.

Which in itself has nothing to do with much else...
- this sentence doesn't really add anything to the Entry smiley - erm

Opticalillusion- media mynx life would be boring without hiccups

Repetition of the word 'many' suggested change to 'multitude of'

<>

I agree with McKay. Just because Emos, Goths etc appear 'different', does not mean that they are a negative force.

Matt, I haven't much to say about the content, never having been to Yate, and I must say this piece doesn't exactly make me want to catch a train there. Is there nothing nice about the place to give some balance?

As a resident of a city that gets more than its fair share of 'slagging off', mostly unjustified, I think you (or the original writer) could have been a little kinder smiley - smiley

I will say one thing though about this bit - <>

smiley - biro I think it dates the piece a bit too much. I would concur with some of the previous comments too.

Only had time to skim read but there were one or two 'wobbly' bits which I will try and point out when I have time, if no-one else does.

The whole tone is much improved. Thank you. I could almost fancy dropping in now smiley - smiley Poor students smiley - biggrin, they aren't all bad surely though it's amazing what a few drinks will do.

There is a documentary on the History Channel on Monday 9th (The Town That Time Forgot - 10pm) that may shed further light on Yate. smiley - towel

Nice work, Matt. smiley - smiley

If anything you've over-tarted up this crap town, but I've only been there once and it wasn't memorable enough to give evidence to the contrary.

We have a few crap-town entries in the guide (eg Yateley A137602), but I think you'd have to live there to be authoritately venomous.

I'd like to update Bracknell (A322291) one day, but the thought depresses me.

I just read some of the comments to the Bracknell entry - and there is quite a disconnect between those and the entry.

We have a little town that someone once told me had a tornado just go through. "They estimate that it did about a million dollars worth of improvements," he said.

sorry - off topic
