Author: Watermusic - More thanks - to McKay, Pimms and Z - U552734
Here is my first geographical entry.
I hope it is in the form required.
I have linked it to some entries which are pending, or still in PR. Hopefully they will be in the guide before this gets anywhere!

A very good entry - it got me wondering whether Lagos, Nigeria had a Portuguese link?
This can go straight to EG, I think.

Yes, sprout, Lagos was the centre for the Portuguese Discoveries, both for the boatbuilding and the navigators that started the European exploration of the West Coast of Africa, (and eventually rounded the Cape of Good Hope) in the early 15th century. Several places around there have names that have come from the Portuguese place names, although I can't think of any without getting the atlas out!
The word 'zebra' is actually Portuguese for a wild horse.
See Philippa of Lancaster - it was Prince Henry (the Navigator) who started the Discoveries.
Perhaps I should put more of that in the history? a footnote?

Watermusic, much as I love gratitute I'm only doing my job, admittedly I'm not paid for it.. but I should be
This is another excellent entry.. I was just wondered, as your sections are rather long wether a few sub header tags would go rather nicely?

Thanks where thanks is due,Z. I've only been in hootoo for two months, and any help on the learning curve is really appreciated.
I've just looked through it again and agree that some sections are rather long, but what sub-headers and where to put them? (My original has photos where appropriate)

Just corrected a couple of spellings - and some punctuation.
I had spelt Manuel - Manual! must have had the manual worker in mind?

Thorough and well written entry
A few grammaticals:
"Lagos was a former capital of the Algarve"
You don't need 'was' and 'former' in the same sentence, unless Lagos was one of many former capitals and has since become capital again. How about 'Lagos is a former capital of the Algarve'.
"The remains of the Roman period lie beneath the oldest part of the city"
Since we've already been told that the Roman settlement was the first on this site, we can kinda deduce that
Fraid that's all I've got time for right now - this is a very exhaustive entry

Hi Gosho,
Lagos was a former capital of the Algarve, as were Silves and Tavira, and it now is Faro. The Governor of the Algarve moved out after the earthquake of 1755 lay the place in ruins.
So I think that bit is all right as it is?
I have taken out the Roman ruins under the oldest part of the city, although the part previously was about the hill camp Lacobriga, which is on the other side of the river and about one and a half kms upstream.
Hi ZSF, 'The Link Queen!',
I shall certainly have a look at those links sometime, in fact I have put that page up in a separate window to remind me!, but it is late now, and I have been too busy today to do any SERIOUS hootooing!

Well, you can only say that Lagos *was* a former capital if Lagos no longer exists. There are a few variations of what I think you're trying to get across:
'Lagos is a former capital of the Algarve'
'Lagos was once capital of the Algarve'
'Lagos was capital of the Algarve between xxxx and xxxx'

As I've only got 1755 for the second date, I've used your second variation on the theme as is a former don't seem to be in the right tense to me.

A grammatical scholar could explain it better than I can, but 'is a former' is correct because:
'is' - Lagos still exists
'a' - there were others, so you can't say 'the'
'former' - it is no longer the capital
'Was once' will do the job just as well though

Just a thought about the title... would "Lagos, the Algarve, Portugal" be a little closer to the standard h2g2 classification?

It tends to go 'Place, Region, Country' - a good place to start exploring what's already out there is A1310329
