nice, but it doesn't mention the problem of some tartans still being restricted.

(yippe, I've finally managed to get a decent sporan. not bad for a sasanack)

Hi Fords,

Good entry smiley - smiley

Looking at the threads attached to it, there's still a lot of interesting info on kilts and tartans outside Scotland that you haven't included.

btw - Sassenach is the Scots' pronunciation of 'Saxon'. Which means I'm not one!

Gif smiley - geek, finally living up to his smilie.

Better a sassenach than a Teuchter! smiley - winkeye

Nice article - very good indeed in fact.

The only comment I'd make is that I'd like to see it made a little clearer the differences between the Lowlands and the Highlands.
For example Glasgow and Edinburgh are Lowland so that the *vast* majority of Scots are now Lowlanders - technicall Sassenachs also smiley - smiley

Two Bit Trigger Pumping Moron

I liked it. I think it's a really practical peice of clothing. I kind of wish we used them in America for formal occasions.

Thanks for all the comments, guys. I didn't want to bog the article down too much - I was thinking of putting a paragraph or something in there, just mentioning a bit about how tartan has evolved as a means of identity. Separating the Highlands from the Lowlands is easy - anything north of Stirling is the Highlands, where the mountains start, that's easy! smiley - winkeye

smiley - yikes My sister gets married next month and we're all going Kilted up smiley - yikes

Will be my first time. smiley - blush Now if I can just hide this darn English accent smiley - grr

(There's a really cool small town just near Stirling - I used to pass it on my way from Glasgow to St. Andrews on the A91 - can't remember its name but it is perfectly flat but at one end - literally at the end of some streets - there is an enormous rearing of craggy mountains. Spectacular and very cool - Possibly Dollar looking at a map now)

that could be expensive. last time I looked into getting full highland dress it would have cost £800+ to buy it, but you don't have to buy, and you don't have to go the whole hog either.

Kilt and sporan will probably do, which would be much cheaper.

Looking good. Only suggestion I have is that the first sentence reads a bit clumsily to my, er, eyes. smiley - erm

"Tartan is known the world over to be part of the national dress of Scotland - the kilt, the history of which goes hand in hand."

Maybe "The history of Tartan is intertwined with that of the kilt, famous worldwide as the national dress of Scotland."
Nah, that's rubbish. smiley - erm

Zarquon's Singing Fish!

When I looked at this entry, I thought it was going to include descriptions of the various tartans, however it is more a history of the development of the tartan and the kilt. It may be that a change of title would be indicated, eg 'The Development of Tartan and the Modern Kilt'. That would be more accuract and would leave the field open for someone else to do an entry on the different tartans, should they so wish.

Nice to see you at today's meet, BTW.smiley - smiley Was the watermelon nice?

Hiya Fords, have you made that wee amendment yet? I'm all set to give this one the big nudge into the warm, clean and ever-so-slightly chlorinated municpal public bath that is the h2g2 Edited Guide.

ZSF!, sorry I didn't get a chance to speak to you, I didn't intentionally ignore you! The watermelon was lovely, but pity the poor people I shook hands with, me and my sticky hands!
