The journal is, essentially, a moderated blog, since anyone can press the Yikes! button. There are many other sites on which users can post their online diaries and the BBC doesn't have the staff to moderate each person's individual diary entries - close the journal and other online blogs at the BBC and save the Cult website (though only for those shows which the BBC actually produces)!

Thanks for the feedback, SSL69. It's worth remembering though that h2g2 and Cult aren't funded by the same budget and so changes to h2g2 don't affect Cult, or visa versa. Nor would removing that particular feature reduce costs sufficiently. Many h2g2 users find the journal a useful feature of the site and enjoy its link to other user-generated content via the Personal Space that every h2g2 member gets on registering to the site.
Regards,
Jimster

And thanks for being so kind in your reply and recognising it's just a timid user's efforts to try to make things better . . .

Absolutely no problem. We never pretend to have all the answers but there are occasions where what might appear logical on the outside is actually unconnected. Likewise, there are some solutions that won't occur to us because we're too close to the centre of things. As long as it's polite, we welcome all feedback and sugestions

Journals for many people are like mini-articles. I often mention new science or health news in them as well as personal stuff. We would all miss out on so much if journals were removed.
