'Search' in plain skin

I like the plain thing!

Downloading a randomly chosen conversation page took
106kB in Brunel,
82kB in alab*ster,
59kB in Goo,
and...
38kB in plain - which makes me thing my modem just got wings smiley - biggrin

However, could there please be a 'search' link in the bar to the left? And perhaps a 'Peer Review' and a front page link too? I notice the layout is very similar to Goo, and Goo features these links along the top of the page.

Why on earth is Brunel so heavy? It's probably all those stupid style attributes to handle the black/white switching.

and perhaps the repeated attributes which contain the full settings although the only change to the previous tag is the size.

What if you include Graphics, though? then I'll bet Alabaster and Goo don't look so hot...

Here's the stats for an entry of mine:
Brunel: 52kB
Alab*ster: 44kB
Goo: 42kB
plain: 23kB

perhaps not exactly what you mean because that's the pure html without graphic files. However, blobs and smileys are the same size everywhere, give or take a few bytes for the black/white varieties.

Anyway, plain beats them again.

for my personal space, using the trusty "save with images" command in opera:

alabaster: 115KB (html alone: 64KB)
brunel: 133KB (html alone: 96KB)
goo: 128KB (html alone: 58KB)
plain: 86KB (html 36KB, css file 6KB)

Conclusion: the amount of HTML that Brunel generates is ridiculous; I thought that goo would come out worse but I'm stunned that if my analysis is right, you're far and away quitcker to use goo than brunel, especially since skin images can be cashed smiley - yikes in fact, if you're not downloading the skin images each time, goo is a little quicker than alabaster, although plain wins ultimately.
