It doesn't look right with a hyphen. Not saying it isn't, but it just doesn't.

I think it's OK.
Hyphens are very easy to get wrong.
We'd use potato-peeler for the tool, but potato peeler for a person doing the job, for example.

Check the Web for 'compound adjectives' - you might even find examples that specifically mention 'high-heeled shoes' 
'English Usage in Approved Entries' gives some examples.

I've looked it up before, but still never understand it. I was just saying I thought it looked wrong. Sub never complained.

It didn't seem worth learning the hard bits when there are lovely people on h2g2 who think it's easy.
