Hi, There is a factual error in my entry about this town in the Irish midlands. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/A42131107). The "large country house" at Ballyfin was not, as stated "a seminary". It was, in fact, a secondary school operated by the Patrician Brothers who purchased the house in 1928. As the article states, the school is now closed and there are plans to convert the house into a hotel and spa.
I would also like to include a link to the following site which has a number of photographs and stories featuring Portlaoise as well as albums by local musicicans. http://www.portlaoisepictures.com/
