Omens of Oblivion: Reunited

Instinctively, Freya stretched out her arm and hurled a fire ball at the goblin mage that knocked it back, out of sight. Hastily, Freya struggled to get up on her feet, cursing the pebbles on the cave floor. She charged torwards where she had last seen the goblin, sword raised, only to find it lying still. Puzzled that it had only taken one fire ball to kill it, she kneeled down beside the body, sword still at the ready.

Yes, it was dead. Oddly enough, the robe it wore had no magical protection - that seemed oddly careless for a mage. Perhaps it had put too much trust into the force of its staff. Freya got up, rubbing her lower back where it still hurt from the contact with the cave floor, and circled the cave and gathered what useful and valuable stuff she could find. The staff especially ought to fetch a nice price.

Reluctantly, Freya left the camp fires behind her and entered yet another tunnel, this one bearing uphill. Another door, and still upwards. Turning a corner, she saw a breach in a wall, very similar to the one the rats had broken through. Carefully, she approached it - and there were the pillars and arches she had spotted from below.

Not knowing what to expect, Freya was slowly advancing when she heard voices ahead - human voices, this time. She thought she recognised the voices as those of the Emperor's body guard, meaning she must have caught up with them. Suddenly there was shouting and the clashing of weapons, indicating yet another attack on the Emperor.

It seemed the guards had managed to defeat the attackers, and Freya edged closer, when she heard the Emperor say:

'Have you seen the prisoner?'

Freya froze. Had he sensed her presence? She held still while listening to the guards urging the Emperor to move on, but he refused. Chewing her lower lip, Freya decided she had no choice but to step forward, or else they would all be stuck here. She moved to the edge of the ledge, bent her knees and jumped down. Straightening up, she approached the Emperor when one of the guards drew his sword, heading towards her with a grim look at his face.

'Damn it, it's that prisoner again! Kill her - she might be working with the assassins!'
