Police procedurals of excellent literary quality: read Reginald Hill's Dalziel/Pascoe novels. Among my reading crowd we think the book "Pictures of Perfection" is superb.

Thanks all, I'll check which ones I can get my hands on (have limited myself to buying books 'live' and by no means online since I'd end up with more books than I have space for).
