Although, there isn't too much to do when in Geneva... so I wouldn't suggest just going there

The American Lung Association's annual bike tour went through Geneva this year. We (about 2000 bicyclists) stayed at the aforementioned college, Hobart & William Smith. The college has some wonderful architecture, as does the lakeside strip (more of a dotted plane, really). There are two cinemas about, oh, four miles apart (man, gotta get an odometer), which caused a bit of confusion when my dad and I agreed to meet for a movie. Some good restaurants pop up in Geneva, but I can't remember any in particular, as we ate at the college. From the outside, though, the restaurants (the ones that preserved the former architecture of the storefront, incidentally) are pretty great. The "Rooster" something's waiter on Saturday evenings gives good directions to movie theaters, too.

Well, I'm glad you enjoyed my alma mater (I have written an entry on Hobart as well... you should check it out off my page - it hasn't been approved yet)... Maybe I was a bit hard on Geneva, it's a great place during the summer... fantastic weather, and the lake is beautiful... I've never been to the Crooked Rooster (it's new) but I've heard good things, and it looks nice from the outside...

Geneva, NY is also the home of the late Arthur Dove, the first American abstract painter. New York City's Whitney Museum did a nice retrospective on him about three years ago.

Hobart and William Smith has a scholarship named after him as well... It's actually a pretty artsy community for such a small city.

happy to see, that there is one more nice Geneva on this (h2g2) world. Since some months I live in Geneva, Switzerland, Europe, age about 2000 years or more, but not that much abstract painters born here -as far as I know- but a lot of other things to be checked out here.
I started a first guide about "my" Geneva (->check my n.y.a guide-entry). If you're interested, I will research a little bit more towards your needs: Hight of mountains around, depth of lake, average yearly temperature, cultural & social behaviours (i.e. how they use a car here), money (key to Switzerland), chocolate, cheese, biking,..

A liquor store in Geneva (The Liquor Barn, or something along those lines) was where I found a bottle of Kirsch (cherry brandy) on the way back from a wine... uhm, purchasing spree. Aren't Hobart & William Smith different colleges?

The bar The Crooked Rooster also happens to be built on Dove Block, which was designed by A. Dove's son in his honor.

All this Geneva talk is making me nostalgic...

Update: The 8-plex on Hamilton St. (5&20) was purchased by the owner of the 5-plex on Exchange St. (Rte 14) and the 5-plex was closed a few months ago. Movies and much more are available at the Smith Opera House on Seneca St. Balcony seats afford a great view. Google "Smith Opera House" to read all about it. There are also movies, theatre, dance and art shows available at the colleges during the school year.
The Rooster in the Dove Block is no more. It was vacant for awhile, then opened as Jelly Beans (bar and restaurant) with bands most every night til it too closed. It was recently purchased by an artist with plans for art studios and exhibit area. About 1/2 the back wall, 3rd floor to basement, collapsed into the alley just prior to her getting plans approved to prevent it from happening. Renovations are ongoing.
Other changes in the downtown bar scene: The Holiday closed.
The owners of Wiley J's retired. It is now McCools (jazz bar/restaurant with putting green) Trotta's changed hands. The Downtown Deli closed and after a year of renovations will soon open as The Red Dove (b/r). The Comedy Club (b/r)came and went and the building is for sale. Sacone's to Nacho Mama's to ? to Castaways (across from Parkers) is closed. It is being extensively remodeled and a new bar/restaurant will open there next month. Cooley's closed. That is now The Red Brick Inn (b/r) which expanded into the neighboring store front.
The "ain't that maternal" ma from Side Show wore out her super soaker and had to get a new one. And she sure could use a clue to put a face on Spaceboy Zoom.
