h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

My home town is actually named for your home town (Scary, isn't it?!). I am told that as settlers arrived on the shores of Lake Erie, they decided that the location was the loveliest place they'd seen since Geneva, New York.

Geneva, Ohio does have the 4th largest festival in the state: Grape JAMboree. That's about all there is to say about Geneva, Ohio.

Wow, I never knew that any place was named after little ol' Geneva, Ny... Actually it's not my home town... just where I went to college... but a lovely place all together

And i'll be darned if I haven't been to both places. Geneva Ohio has a really good winery in the area and I had, of course, to sample soem of the product they produced. In Geneva, NY I ate at a restaurant that was right on the LAke. They had a small building and then a large deck and you could eat either inside or outside. Very nice but a bit pricey.

Even stranger, Geneva NY has quite a few wineries as well... Hey, does the Swiss one have wineries too?

Geneva, OH has several wineries. The Old Mill, which is the only one I can think of that is actually IN Geneva; The Old Firehouse, which is at Geneva-On-the-Lake and is run by my cousin's family (I have been there and even worked there for a while); and several in Austinburg, Madison, and the area.

What did you think of the wines? I like the Firehouse's Seyval and Dechanauc (Yikes! Spelling!) and the Mill's Creme Niagara (wildly sweet).

AND how is it that you've (lucky dog!) been to both? ~grin~

Well, I knew that the NY Geneva had wineries too but did not have time to sample. I also wen5t to the old firehouse in Geneva on the lake. They had excellent wines. I prefer the chardonays myself. I was lucky enough to goto both because I live in Ohio and Work for a company that has a plant in ohio and In Geneva Ny.

I find this quite amusing, as I have cousins in Geneva OH and friends in Geneva NY. Who would have thought they were connected in so many ways? It's kind of freaky

Regarding Geneva, Switzerland - which I believe it to be the most ancient of all - it does have wineyards.

They make fine white wines as well as superb red ones. You'll have to go to a local wineyard to have a taste of them, as they may be difficult to find in stores, due to the small produced volumes.

BTW, Geneva also has a lake, which is usually mis-named lake Geneva, but is really called Lake Leman.

I would actually venture a hypothesis, that Geneva, NY was named after the *original* Geneva, in Switzerland. Probably some Swiss pioneers came across those lakes in NY state and felt just like back home... But who knows.

Maybe the word Geneva is like "Gin and Tonic" in the Hitchhiker's books... you know, like part of our cultural subconsciousness..
