I went back to the shop yesterday and there was a different person working there. She adjusted the frames a bit and we did a reading test then she adjusted them again and it was a lot better.
She told me to persevere with them and to go back if I was still having problems etc.
So feeling a lot better about them now

I can relate to your problems with varifocals. I have two pairs, one clear, one sunglasses. I have trouble with both. I have difficulty keeping my head tilted far enough back to use the reading portion. I suspect the frames are too big, but they were the only frames I could find that suited me and were large enough to accommodate varifocal lenses.
