Hi Anna. smiley - smiley Great to see the article approved.

There were some fascinating points made in the forums attached to the original Entry ~ particularly the one from Plaguesville, which mentioned his silent word ÒukepÓ.

Have they vanished into the ether?

No, don't worry, they're not lost at all. This Approved Entry is a copy of the original and the threads to which you refer can still be found hanging off of that smiley - smiley

Thanks for that, Sam. smiley - smiley

It's getting a bit confusing down here. The article has now generated no less than 16 conversations ~ plus the original 5. A veritable can of worms, I know, but I don't want to ignore or lose any of the comments. Perhaps the original 5 conversations should be attached to the now Approved article.

If we can have an silent word, why not an invisible word? I propose for this category. It's pronounced "yef."

Y as in "jalapeno"
Short E as in "Xmas" or "X-ray"
F as in the British pronunciation of "Lieutenant"
R as in "octopus" (It's silent.)

Invisible words, eh? Whatever next?
Somewhat limited in application, perhaps; although I may be overdue for my surrealism transfusion.
I think the "y" in Jalapeno is taking a liberty, next two I follow and approve - if you don't find that patronising. ("Patronising": that's when someone tries to demonstate superiority by talking down to someone else.) I'm struggling with the "R" in octopus.
Had you considered the "pee" in bath, that may, or may not be invisible depending on diet.

LOL. Very good, plaguesville.

And it's hal-a-penn-yo, at least in my neck of the woods. I worried about that, actually. Where are you posting from?

Ah.
We're into Nature v. Nurture country.
I allowed local lingo to overide my knowledge of Spanish, which has remained almost undisturbed desde 30 años. If you ask in the shops in the proper pronuciation e.g. "Where's the chabatta (ciabatta) bread?" the reply is "Dunno."
"Well it was here last week."
"Oh you mean see-a-batta bread." often followed by "I'm fed up of telling people there's no demand for it!"
Posting from N.W. England, Stockport near Manchester.
