I've heard a lot about this Karma Sutra thing (book I suppose, but what is it really and is it worth an investment?
The Kama Sutra
Lisekit Posted Jun 22, 2000
THe Kama Sutra is an ancient Indian love manual, dating from aboput 1AD, the writing of which is attributed to the sage Vatsayana. The title comes from the Sanskrit *Kama* - "pleasure", and *Sutra*, literally "string"; the "Sutra" is a very compunded instructions or sayings designed to be easily memorised, a style in which most Sanskrit religious or legal texts are written, which then have to be expounded again in order to make sense. Unusually for the period, women are encouraged to read the Kama Sutra as well as men.
The Kama Sutra presents itself as a guide for married lovers, and concerns itself with topics as diverse as How to Decorate your House, How the nobleman should Amuse himself at Various Times of Day, How to Woo a Wife (including Creating Confidence in the Girl), a variety of ways in which to embrace, kiss, bite, scratch, and strike your lover for erotic effect, How to Seduce the Wife of another (although Vatsayana does not recommend this course), How to Make Up After an Argument, procedures for eunuchs and courtesans, anecdotes about harem women, and of course the "Sixty Four" - a section on reccomended positions for the act of love, some of which require Olympic Gymnastic standards of strength and flexibility. The practice of Yoga was common in this era, and probably made some of these postures easier.
Most "Illustrated" versions of the Kama Sutra contain either photographs of the erotic sculptures at Khajhuraho which feature many couplings and quite a few triplings and date from 5-8AD, or minature paintings from the Mughal era, circa 1600-1700. The "illustrations" Vatsayana had in mind were of a rather more physical and personal nature!
In all, the Kama Sutra is a pretty good read, and a good starting point for ideas on some of life's simpler physical pleasures, much more down to earth and informative than its reputation as an eye-popping guide to what those crazy Orientals get up to would suggest. The chief thrust of its advice is that the man (or rather husband) should pleasure the woman rather than the other way around, which makes a refreshing change from Cosmo and the like.
Most bookstores have a copy of the Kama Sutra - you can get pocket book versions or full-scale coffee table books. Translation note: the "lingam" is his and the "yoni" is hers....
