Hi there!
Bistroist Started conversation May 16, 2000
Welcome to H2G2
Sheesh, that's an impressive introduction you've got! Please excuse me while I go back and pick up my jaw
My name's Bistroist and I'm one of the Guide's Assistant Community Editors (ACE's). We're a bunch of volunteers who roam this place trying to be as nice and helpful as possible, and meet and greet as many newcomers as we can.
If there's something you need help with, or just want a few links to some of the cool places in here, I suggest you visit our common homepage.

I'm not sure if you know this already, but there's a welcoming message to all newcomers over here

Other questions you'd might like to ask? Try the "ask H2G2" and "How do I..."-forums

btw. In case you haven't noticed, the "Don't Panic" button in the top menu bar links to an occasionally useful help section.
Don't worry if you don't understand any of this, just stick this in your ear

And it's hello from me. We have a few interests in common. I invite you to my gallery at http://www.h2g2.com/A304354 where I have some photographic restorations.
Welcome to our interesting civilisation.

Lil,
Thanks for the welcome. I enjoyed checking out your home page. Just getting my feet wet here at present (only discovered the guide today), but I'm definitely enjoying the place.

Hi there!
J'au-æmne Posted May 20, 2000
Hi again,
I see you've written another entry, you're good at this! I look forward to reading about Four-Square.
Hi there!
Redbeard (Thanks to all who supported The Celery!)) Posted May 20, 2000
Good to see you again Joanna!
Just had one of your donuts at the Aroma Cafe... delicious!
I'm enjoying it here, and while I've already written two entries in my first three days, I'm humbled by seeing that you seem to write about one a day! I've got a note to myself to start reading your entries when I get a chance. They look fascinating.
*reads the entry on Excuses and has to stop for five minutes because he's laughing so hard*
I'll let you know when I get the Four-Square entry written...
"The orange juice container said 'Concentrate'"!!!!
Hi there!
J'au-æmne Posted May 20, 2000
I hardly think one a day.... Just over one a week, for 21 weeks now but they come in spurts. Many of my entries aren't finished, though But I have projected dates to finish them and submit them, ie when my exams are over!
You should check out Demon Drawer, he aimed to have 250 entries this year, and he was competing with someone for the most approved entries... but unfortunately that researcher has decided not to h2g2 anymore. If you continue at this rate, you could give him a run for his money!

Hi there!
Babel17 Posted May 20, 2000
Sorry to drop this on Pete's page, but Joanna, I have an email address for you from Summer Dragon. Can you email me? (address on homepage). I will pass it on. Its for your eyes only.
Thanks in advance, btw do you have Irving W's email at home, too?
I would much appreciate it. He asked me to drop him a line.
Thank you muchly

Hi there!
J'au-æmne Posted May 20, 2000
okay....
*looks slightly confused, but loads messenger anyhow...*
I'm emailing you as I type. Which is quite silly to say really since although my computer can supposedly multitask I cannot, and can only write in one window at at time
Joanna
Hi there!
Redbeard (Thanks to all who supported The Celery!)) Posted May 22, 2000
Joanna and B-17,
Sorry I wasn't home when you dropped by. Went out of town for a day, forgetting that people might visit at any time here, and I feel bad that I didn't leave some snacks out for visitors. Hope you made yourselves at home and that Jean-Luc and Falstaff didn't bother you (they were probably hiding under the bed anyway -- they're scaredy cats around humans -- I'll have to bring them over to the cafe to meet Ook some time.)
Joanna -- what do you mean you can't write in two windows at once? I would think that would be an elementary problem for a physics whiz like you! Not that I'd understand it -- I see stars whenever I try to read your page!
Joanna, I doubt I'll be able to give Demon Drawer or or you a run for your money on numbers of entries (I'll have to do a few other things besides h2g2), but I'll work on it.
Hi there!
Redbeard (Thanks to all who supported The Celery!)) Posted May 22, 2000
Jean-Luc and Falstaff are pretty quiet, but they're good friends and keep the ship clear of vermin, as well as keeping an eye on things when I'm out. As far as their names go, don't ask me... they picked them. But one of them reads Shakespeare quite a bit, so that may explain something.
If you check out my updated home page, you may get a glimpse of them.
Hi there!
Asteroid Lil - Offstage Presence Posted May 22, 2000
Your ship? Oh, yes, your ship. That makes perfect sense.
I'm delighted to see how well you're settling in -- I think a place like this suits your imagination perfectly.
See you at the cafe!
Hi there!
J'au-æmne Posted May 24, 2000
ooohhh... I just found your web tutorial.
I suppose I should really quit pretending to be revising, huh?
(Joanna tries very hard not to start experimenting with frames.... very hard....)
Hi there!
J'au-æmne Posted May 24, 2000
oh, and btw I looked at your researcher id card page, would you like me to do my acely duty and bring it to the attention of The Powers That Work Very Hard (TPTWVH) ??
Hi there!
Redbeard (Thanks to all who supported The Celery!)) Posted May 24, 2000
Joanna,
I would be thrilled if you brought the id card to the attention of TPTWVH
Yes, frames can be very seductive. The trick is to use them when they really serve a purpose, to carefully plan the site, and to make sure you don't end up with links trapped in a frame.
My Web"tricks" page isn't really all that "tricky," but I tried to compile some useful basic html stuff. I even find MYSELF referring to it on occasion when I'm trying to remember a tag or attribute that I don't use that often.

Hi there!
J'au-æmne Posted May 24, 2000
I don't intend to overload frames, I believe they were listed in "the top ten mistakes of web design"...
But I just want to know how. One day I shall create a site with lots and lots and lots of javascript and frames, all to no purpose, to get the desire out my system, and then I shall hopefully be able to moderate my use of them...
I wrote my first ever javascript on Sunday and I was everso pleased.. not that it does anything useful, but I do so love to program!
And I posted the address of the ID card proposal to the aces mailing list, so someone in the towers should see it in the morning. I don't know how they'll take it, but they'll see it.

Hi there!
vegiman:-) Posted May 24, 2000
Hi RedBeard
I have just popped over as Joanna has notifid the Ace team of your idea for ID cards - I expect a few more will follow to say Hi.
I visited your page and think the Idea would be great - I dont know if h2g2 will go for it but I hope hey do, but as you say, they could be abused.
StevenR designed an ID card to go on Researchers own websites - you can find info on that on my home page.
The h2g2 Post newspaper is looking for someone to help out with graphic art - I wonder if you would consider it, (Sorry No Pay) it is run completely by Researchers and you'll find it at
http://www.h2g2.com/u54963
I also caught some of your light & Shade pics - Great - I loved em.
vegiman
Thanks for letting me drop by
Hi there!
Redbeard (Thanks to all who supported The Celery!)) Posted May 24, 2000
Thanks for stopping by, vegiman!
Glad you got a chance to check out some of my photos.
I'll check out the Post newspaper, but don't know if I'm ready to volunteer graphic work. It's not the lack of pay -- there are a tremendous number of things I do for free that I enjoy -- but I'm already spending so much time at h2g2 my first week that it's a little bit scary
As far as the ID card, thanks for the comment. Who knows? Might even eventually bring in a few bucks for h2g2 if it turns out to be practical.
