A Conversation for The h2g2 Tour - An Introduction to h2g2
Hello!
Jimi X Posted Jun 13, 2007
Welcome to h2g2!
While I'm not an official greeter, I'm sure one of the ACEs (Assistant Community Editors) will be along shortly to give you the full-fledged welcome.
One of the things I'm sure they'll tell you is to personalize your Personal Space. Let other researchers here on the site know a bit about you, how you got here, what your interests are, etc.
Me? Oh, I'm known around here as Jimi X and I've been puttering about the site for close to eight years (a lifetime in Internet time).
There's a lot on h2g2 to recommend but I won't overwhelm you straight away. Hope you stick around and find your own special niche!

You could start with the basics:
1) How you came to the site
2) What your three favourite hobbies are
3) What you think about any current world event or affair
As you can see from my page, I'm pretty well inovlved with the creation of the site's Edited Guide as was spelled out in Douglas Adams' original vision for the place. To that end, I've written or contributed to more than 300 entries.
You don't need to do all that however. You can start by simply reading the stuff on the front page of the site and making comments to the author by clicking the 'Start a new conversation' button.
If I'm not mistaken, one of my first conversations on the site was about the Tiger entry where I remarked that tigers have striped skin as well as striped fur.
Nearly eight years later, I'm still here chatting away...
Which I guess shows that you should be careful when you start a new conversation eh?

> "what does H2G2 mean?"
That's an odd question for someone posting on the introductory tour pages who thus might reasonably have been assumed to have read those pages.
See also "What is h2g2?" link in the left-hand panel which goes to the start of the tour: <./>dontpanic-tour</.> in which it says: "What is h2g2?" ... "h2g2's inspiration comes from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".
Perhaps that help page isn't explicit enough in saying that Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, may be abbreviated to HHGTTG (by some) or just HHGG (by others) and thus H2G2 (as preferred by Douglas Adams himself).

Hi i just enlisted a few moments ago, and I am tentatively checking out the forums. Please advise as to how would a new user like me get involved. What are the main topics of interest that are discussed here. I think its a fascinating site, quite educationally inspiring too. I look forward to being inducted in the community

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
