HELP - IS NOGGIN STILL THERE

Noggin - my help in my hour of need - I need you again.
I have tried again (3 times) to put my details in my Personal Space. Every time I press the update button, the bottom of my screen says 'Done' then I go back to my 'Personal Space' and it is still saying 'You have'nt filled in your Personal Space bla bla bla bla'.
I there anything else I need to press? I thought as soon as I pressed the update button them the screen would come onto my personal space.
Am I expecting too much?

Hi brendab
It could, as Noggin has said in another thread, be due to a technical fault with the database. Try again today.
You *must* type something in the entry field. If you leave it blank and press 'Update Introduction' the system will automatically insert the 'Unfortunately brendab doesn't seem to have found the time to write anything...' text. So you must type something, even if it's just 'hello.'

Noggin's not online at the moment so I'll see if I can help.
From the sounds of it you are getting to the edit stage of your personal space, writing in the info and then when you press update nothing happens.
The first thing I would suggest doing is entering the details you want, then pressing the preview button. At this point the page should reload and you should see your introduction followed by the edit box.
If that comes up ok then press the update entry button, now wait, it should eventually take you to your home page, the 'done' by explorer is not very helpful as it only tells you that the current page is fully loaded, not whether all the scripts have fully excecuted.
However I will agree with Amy that we are having difficulties with the site at the moment so if you get error pages or it still doesn't work you may find copying and pasting your introduction into a text document will save you time if you need to go through the process a few times.
If you still can't get it to work come back here and I'll see what we can do.
You can tell if people are online by looking at their names above their posts, if there are little eyes next to them then they are still about.
If I'm not online then you shall probably have to wait until French working hours until I post again

Thank you both sooooo much.
What has happened, I tried, last week-end to insert my details in personal space.
When I preview the message everything is O.K.. so press upload then ziltch.
When I go back to edit page, all my details are still there (it took me ages to think what to say), preview, still there, upload, ziltch.
I will try again and thank you both for ALL your help, much appreciated.
You in France Mel? Never been but had a lovely french lady staying with me a few years ago. Lost touch now but she was lovely, a good friend.
If I come back again I'll probably have turned to drink through frustration so hope you can join me in a glass of red.
Thank you both once again. - I can do that alright, (post funny faces I mean) it's the personal space thing that's baffling me.

Here's a to help the process.
Yes I am in France, but only for another 3 weeks I've been doing a year out here and it's nearly at an end, I'm really

brendab, once you've pressed the Update Introduction button you mustn't use the back button to return to the preview. That's what results in the 'Don't Press This Button Again' message.
Each time you have a go at updating your page you must start afresh by taking the 'My Space' link at the side of the page and then pressing the 'Edit Page' link again.
If you've changed the style to GuideML it might be a good idea to change it back to Plain Text while you get this to work. To change it back, go to your page, click on the Edit Page link, scroll down to just below the Update Introduction button. There you will see two radio buttons. Make sure that the plain text button is selected and press 'Change Style.'

Ooh, hang on. I think I've found the problem. An extra tag has snuck in there somehow. There should be no tags in the stuff you write in the box.

Hi brendab
I see you have edited the content of your page but it still isn't displaying properly.
Have you changed the style to Plain Text as I suggested above?

I've had another idea. Try removing the empty lines (carriage returns) that you've put in above the words.

Hi Amy
I cut my message down to the bare minimum
No Angels/Magic/Dogs
Typed in Plain Text
Still Nothing
There's no face for pulling your hair out otherwise it would be all over this page.
Is it me? The only buttons I can press are Preview, Plain, or Update

I'm really sorry you're having such a dreadful time with this. We *will* get it sorted.
Have a . Deep breaths.
Please review the advice I've given so far. Did it all make sense? Have you tried everything I've suggested?

I've fixed it for you. Somehow (and I'm not quite sure how, since it ought to be impossible) you've managed to save a non-GuideML page which is marked as GuideML.
All I did to fix it was edit the page, click on the Plain Text radio button, click change type, then click update entry. I suspect it's one of these steps you were missing (probably the final 'update entry' one, since it's not obvious that you need to do that to actually store the changes.
Anyway, you should be able to edit your page normally now.

It's interesting that you can see a dropdown called 'plain.' Can you remember how you got into the plain skin? Was it something you did deliberately or has it always been like this.
I'd like you to try the following. Go to the Preferences section using the link at the side of the page. Change your 'skin' preference to Brunel. Then logout and close down all h2g2 windows. Come back into h2g2 via the Front Page using the URL http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2 (write that down and type it in by hand, don't use a bookmark or a favourite link from your browser).
Then scroll down the page to the bottom and find the Edit Page link (when you view your page in Brunel, the page is displayed in reverse with your personal bit at the bottom). Try editing the page again, checking that the style is set to Plain Text.
That's a lot to remember. I suggest you copy and paste it into notepad first.
