are your friends people you actually know? if not how do you fiend friends on h2g2?

You can add anyone you like to your friends list (although it's often polite to ask first). Somepeople even use it as an 'enemies' list 
.
As to making friends: since researchers (and staff) are coincidentally real people just like yourself, this tends to happen in the normal ways.
