I'm not sure where you are Mike, but Borders bookshops get a lot of US magazines in (at least the techie and outdoor ones so I guess they'll have US music mags as well).
As for radio I supose it's a case of finding what you're looking for. I'm a bit of an rock/indie/dance crossover type chap so there is quite a bit of stuff being played by the likes of the Evening Session, John Peel and Mary Anne Hobbs on R1 to be able to get into.
A freind of mine in Ipswich can get some German "Classic Rock" radio station on AM, he used to listen to an australian station on the net while he was doing his PhD

I've never heard of "Spoons". What are they, an alternative group?

No, that's the Lovin Spoonful.
What a day for a daydream...

But they're not alternative. I'll have some of that ice cream, Lil!

That would be Demon.Strawberry.Net, and Mike A finished it off two days ago. But we can get more. Meanwhile, I'm carrying the conversation over to

Finally, some final notes:
Too young to have a credit card to make use of...I got about £30 to call my own and I know it should all be gone on monday
Radio 1 have a HM show apparently, but it's on at something like midnight. Probably only plays fashionable, cool, new metal this side of the millenium. It is Radio 1 after all.
Guess we'll carry this on in the other thread then
