Academics do tend to hang around eachother. However, others of intellect also hang around them.

As a person who used to have some academic pretensions myself, may I say Academics are grossly overrated!

Academics, with only one exception that I can think of, make me spit. So many of them think that being intelligent is enough...

Enough for what is the question. It can be enough for an interesting conversation. Enough to create a well-rounded human, no.

I don't mean to chase you away -- you're just doing the equivalent of standing in the hallway, and as hostess I just want to make you welcome. You can go to the library or the conservatory or wherever you like. But I don't know as anyone else has met KerrAvon and I hoped to introduce him or her...

KerrAvon is definitely and wonderfully female, a former member of the Small But Vocal Minority, and a frequenter of the UK meets. I assume that Grey Desk knows her, and possibly Titania. Her posts are interesting, witty, aposite, and to the point. Oh, and quite often sarcastic, but that is just her inner Brit.

*curtsies* Very pleased to meet you KerrAvon, and I hope you join us in the salon. But there are lots of other virtual place threads here where you can hang out if the crowd is too big for you -- check http://www.asterlil.com/atelierhome.htm for orientation.
And anyway, who is ltp calling academics in post #1? Only a minority of salonistas would count as such.

My comment re achademics was just a "retort" for want of a better word to para in a304,and was inplying that What "intellegent" people call "play" would be more akin to "seek and destroy" and however "trivial" content of any "disscussion/debate" most achademics tend to form groups for/against what they are "defending attacking"
kerr i chated to on a couple of threads last may as bllszbobakahannahs...............ect last may look forward to exchange views again with her and her partner sometime

Surely that is a feature of the species as a whole?

yes but the true nature of achademics is to "study write thesis" in secret and only converge in "packs" to destroy opposition "by fair means or foul" signified by topic "like to play"
lil or anyone else A2232631 might add more later

I see what you mean, ltp. Cut and thrust of academic debate and all that. Though I'd imagine it's a bit of freeforall scrum, rather than a pack out to get one itty bitty other academic.
But what the line refers to is the roleplaying aspect of the Altelier and other parts of h2g2 which salonistas engage in. The sort of make believe fantasy story telling bit. I think the point is that while it may seem initially odd to some people that grown up and occassionally sane people enjoy a good run around in a virtual forest shooting magical paintballs and ever more unlikely missiles at each other and ever more unlikely monsters, our position is that this kind of mental play is perfectly consistant with and conpatible to intelligence and is in no way juvenile when done right.
That's not quite what I mean, but...
