The UK census office are "proper" civil servents, they view it as their duty to record what people answer and publish the statistics accordingly.
It doesn't actually make the religion "official", they just record that the number of people giving that answer was sufficient to make it into the statistics.
I'm just wondering what readers will make it in a centuries time when the individual census returns are available from the public record office.
