Only 15 Aussies?
Quadrapop on h2g2 Posted Oct 23, 2000
Hi Tab,
I'm actually going to Adelaide first, my husband's parent's live there. Which part of Adel's are you from? I shall be staying in Hove. You're right about the over grown country town bit, Perth was like that 30+ years ago when we first arrived.
C is going straight onto Sydney, he starts his new job the same day you do... Oct 30th! (Congratulations BTW) He's going to house hunt for us up around Killara - Hornsby direction. Once he has a place lined up we will go join him there.
Speaking of a h2g2 meet - how many Sydney-siders are there now? When we get there, I know of 4 people at least. Maybe we should all meet up for a picnic in a park one weekend arvo... any suggestions?

Hi Q'pop
I was in Unley for a time, norwood, burnside.. I moved around a bit, I was studying and renting which usually means an almost yearly move when leases run out.
I am now doing the house hunt thing in Melbourne.... I ve got about 5 weeks left on this lease and cant extend it, so the hunt is on..

tabatha Posted Oct 29, 2000
Just found post no 59... missed it the first time 'round.
I am extremely excited about starting tomorrow... sorry I haven't posted for a while but I went home to SA for a couple of days to visit my dog and my family (notice my dog comes first!!).
I start work tomorrow, and somehow in the next 5 weeks I need to find a new house to live in... could be a busy few weeks I think. I have to be out of here by the end of November....
Lots to prepare for tomorrow, will post after work (!!!) to let you know how it went...

Thanks Bran... the trick will be trying to get any sleep tonight. I just want it to be about a month or two from now, when I feel comfortable with all the people and know where I stand - I hate starting new jobs.. You dont know who is who and who you can trust and who to gossip with and about who etc etc. So you just have to keep your mouth shut. And everyone is forming first impressions of you which we all know are all very important.. I just want the next month to be done.. Im sure it will be fast enough...
Ill let you know how it goes...

Thanks for your note. You, me, and another American I speak with regularly, that leaves 61 to find. Hello! Is there anyone out there? Hey, Aussies, I'm sure there is, oops, are more of you than just 15 or so. Maybe even a couple of New Zealanders. If there is a way to find H2G2's census of participants, I would love to find out how to get it. Sorry for barging in, Ya'll have fun...

Hiya Phil from one of the Aussies. Greetings. Not sure how many of us there are ... but lots more than 15. If you go back through the thread after the 15 was estimated, tons more have since appeared. Where are you?
Tab, how went the first week on the job?
Cheers
Bran.
First week
tabatha Posted Nov 7, 2000
First week went really well, I think Ill be on a fairly steep learning curve for a while though. Everyone seems really friendly and kind and all that at this stage. Very helful and willing to explain everything (and hopefully not getting too sick of all my questions) I figure the only stupid question is the one that you didn't ask, and its better to ask a stupid question than to make a stupid mistake - so needless to say the questions are flowing thick and fast.
Any news on your job? (I vaguely recall you telling me something about it but cant remeber what and scrolling back through the posts is just too much hard work for this time of night)
Did you do anything 'cupish' today? Here am I living in Melbourne and I didn't even watch it on the tele, let alone go... obviously Im not a true melbournian yet.. perhaps next year.
anyway, haven't posted for a while, I ve been really tired - full time work really takes it out of you - but I hope all is well with you..

I'm Back!
Bran the Explorer Posted Nov 24, 2000
Hi Tab
Sorry for the length of time in replying to your post ... I have been a bit obsessed with the PhD of late and have been a focussed fellow. Great to hear that the job went well in the first week. People are generally nice, I find, and willing to help new people. There is no stupid question, as you say.
No luck for the job that I was going for. It closed on Monday, and on Thursday, in what must have been the quickest academic hiring decision ever, I received a letter saying that I had not been successful. Not even an interview. So it goes. Most of the rest of the applicants, I understand, had PhDs already completed, so I was behind the 8 ball at the beginning. Even so ... still a bit discombobulating.
So, after a wallow in self pity, I have decided that I have to get the Tome done sooner than later, and have had a renewed burst of energy.
A glorious weather day here. I am off to play golf later (there is working hard and then there is working hard). Have a great weekend Tab.
Cheers
Bran.

Hi Tashalls,
Ummm, sorry I've only just got back to h2g2
Could you direct me to the thread in question as the most recent one is rather off topic!
We are settled into a leafy northern shores suburb and looking for contact with friendly folk.
Hope the meeting went well. Let me know about the next one.

How many Aussies did you originally count? I know this is a late post but hell, I am sure there are more of us around now
Count me in as true blue but living in exile in the land of the free... well it will be as soon as i get my residency and stop being an illegal alien
