Thats what most (ei, me) have been pondering over in this forum for weeks, so what, what is in a name?
The Merging / What's in a name?
Zelda Posted May 4, 2000
Okay, I get the point you couldn't give a toss about names, Slooti, but if you look past this to what my objection to the article actually were, you will see that there were some factual errors in the article too. Surely there is no point in giving out any information about anything if it isn't accurate?

True, but just remember next time, don't just complain at the researchers, only the editor can change it. If you like check through my original, and point out ab=ny mistakes in it, but I don't think that there was any:

Hi Slarti. Yes I did read your original article, and I didn't just 'complain at the researchers', I pointed out the mistakes to Pastey. After a week without a reply - he seems to have dropped through a black hole - I followed the instructions given in the Guide under the section 'What to do if you find mistakes in Guide Entries', and contacted the Editor. In due course I was contacted by Anna, who asked for the appropriate information, and duly corrected the mistakes. I did follow the recommended procedure, believe it or not.

Sorry I haven't been around to answer this forum, but I've got a good excuse, I'm getting married very shortly so things are kinda hectic.
The way the editing process works for us subs is that we get sent the articles in an email. We then take them and check up on any facts that may be wrong & check grammar and spelling and such. We also look through the Guide for any other articles on the subject that may be in the queue to be approved. If there are any, as there was in htis case, we do our best to try and merge them into the one entry. When we've done that we send the entries back to the h2g2 editing team who do a quick final check and put them into the Guide. Once we've sent them back, there is nothing we can do to change them. We can bring mistakes and such to the attention of the h2g2 team, but it's just as quick for anyone to do that. We do have to take a lot of what is in an article on good faith, assuming that the researcher who wrote it knows about the subject. If something sounds a bit iffy, then we go off and look it up, but when the article is on a town or city that is a few hundred miles from where you live, and is one that you've never visited... then you just have to do the best you can.
But, this is one of the great things about the Guide, if you know that something is wrong, there is a way to get it put right

Thank you Pastey, that's exactly what I did. Peace offering cheerfully accepted Slarti!
Sorry it's taken so long to reply, but we've been having problems with our connection with good old Karoo.

That annoys me sometimes to. Oh well it only cost 5.5p!
The Merging / What's in a name?
Zelda Posted May 12, 2000
Feel free! Karoo is our local ISP, and is the working name of Kingston Internet, operated by that well-known giant of the stock exchange, Kingston Communications, Hull's very own telephone company. None of your BT rubbish here. Our rubbish is home-grown! Seriously, in the main they are very good. If you join Karoo Xtra, you pay £15 a month, and call charges are 5.5p per call, no matter how long you stay on. This applies to normal telephone calls too, so they are quite popular around here. Unfortunately they can be victims of their own success, and demand on the net takes them by surprise, like at Christmas when they were swamped by new connections.
I hope that answers your question!
