One of my friends has a, what they call, St Labrador (St Bernhard & Labrador Retriever). He's a big, very kind and slightly stupid dog.
One thing that makes him whimper with fear, trying to hide behind who ever is out walking him is traffic cones, but only if it's dark outside. In daylight, he has no problems with them.

I had a cat once that was scared of the warp drives on the Starship Enterprise.

I think perhaps you should have thought before you took your cat into space Gnomon. Poor little thing.

One of the funnyiest things is watching my Fathers Gf's dog who will go barking mad (literaterly) when there is anythign taht 'shouldn't' be there on one of its normal walking routes, recently this has included the appearance of large bags of stones for remaking up the paths which suddenly appeared and the dog just didn't like them, also previously large piles of piled up removed tree-cuttings and so forth tis funnny when they do sometimes

I scared one of our pet kittens out of the room by farting recently.
I thought that was quite amusing

Actually I just remembered the thing that really* scares the dog, bridges over water.... it really is quite amusing walking along with the dog, then she'll stop and refuse to go over the footbridge, and this daft silly really quite heavy dog and you have to pick her up and carry her over the footbridge

I can imagine a dog barking at the bags of stones.
To add to the list, yesterday Fred was startled by a seagull feather someone had stuck upright in the sand on the beach.

When we moved into this house, we had an old labrador who suddenly began barking at nothing.
It took us almost six months to realise she was barking at a crane lifting building materials. This crane could only be seen for a few minutes as it came into view between the houses at the back of ours.

Not quite the same but I just remembered an amusing thing the family dog does soemtimes, well a lot on the beach in the summer time; She likes to chase the birds, and of course can never catch them (so its good to wear her out), but she also really gets fasinated by anythign in the sky, espccially people flying kytes, and will chase them, forever..... I seem to remember she'll sometimes bark at them too and yes, she did once distroy someones kyte when it landed on teh beach I'm not sure if she was actually scared of the bags of stones, or just wanted to tell them that this was her teratory and let the bags of stones know who was boss

Found this while I was looking for something else. He's still scared of stupid things. Huge snowballs, people leaning on signs, blankets (or rather, that they might hide secret scary things underneath them) ...
