I'd disagree that techno music doesn't work for a road trip.
The best road trip I've done recently (Hoek van Holland to Poland and back in 36 hours in a stretched Transit) was accompanied by some bangin' techno.
If I was to do it again, I'd take a bit of Prodigy and maybe some Oakenfeld anthem type tunes for when the travelling companions wanted to kip....and "Block rockin' beats" for any driving through sunrise

I've got to say that for my road trips, it's girlie music all the way - I'm talking ABBA, Steps, Westlife etc. It keeps all in the car awake (either because they are singing along or the singing of the person with them is so bad that sleeping is impossible). One requirement for this type of music is that it be a girlie road trip - straight men (unless in touch with their feminine side) would soon jump screaming from the car (of course if it was going to be a girlie road trip in the first place, that will always add to the mood!)

My favourite tunes for travelling to vary. It tends to be stuff like Pink Floyd, or Queen. i wouldn't recommend something like marilyn Manson's Antochrist Superstar, however, particularly during the night, as it might just freak you out.
ABBA are a good choice for road music, and I'm a bloke!

I ain't... but I love my Sublime in the car. Besides that it's all classic rock.

I also prefer techno on the road....especialy when traveling at very high (and unsafe) speeds. Nothing can get you in "the Zone" like electronica.

I think that we need our own article on "The Perfect Road Trip Songs". As summer is coming up and I'm headed off to Red Rocks, Colorado with a friend to go hear Blues Traveler on the 4th of July, I'd need the input. But as far as I'm concerned, you can't beat U2 for night driving. The 80s stuff, not the crap on the Pop album...

One of the funniest things I ever heard was American Stand-Up Steven Wright saying that he and a friend drove from New York to Los Angeles and only had one tape for the journey..... He couldn't remember what it was! Me? I'd have lots of Yes and Supertramp, but then I'm probably old enough to be your father, young man.

My father would have had lots of Beatles and Stones.

All my best road trips, apart from the usual girlie songs have always had one or two theme tunes. The best, a trip away with my closest friends before I went away for a year, had the theme tune "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls. I always smile when I hear that one.

Any road-trips I do are by motorcycle, and as such do not involve stereos. If I have a hang-over I sing Johny Cash songs (wreck of the ol' 97), and If I am just happy I wistle any good blue-grass tune.
If I need motivation in the mornings (or any other time), I turn on the Black Sabbath (Loud). Music is good -especially loud music.

Reading this last entry I made, I'm wishing I didn't burn-out the left channel on my Electrohome amp. -Now I've got to cut the lines to the speakers and use a tube-amp I've recently been given, until I can get the original amp repaired -either way, I'm staying in the 70's, stereo wise, since those are powerful, durable, and repairable.
Soon, the Black Sabbath will annoy the neighbors again.

Best road music would have to be the Beach boys, Jimmy Buffett and good old 80s rock. Me and a friend drove from Atlanta, GA to Costa Rica in 8 days and we had a blast listening to these artist. The best travel music though is music where you can sing along to it as it plays.
