There are still pygmies (little people) on Flores today, suggesting that the older type may simply have assimilated into later arriving and more modern populations.

The central Asian type from post 1, on a basis of gene mapping studies, is thought to be ancestral to Australian Aboriginals, the other Melanesians and India's Dravidian population.

This particular group is thought by some to have originated as a hybrid of a very late form of homo habilis and a very early form of homo erectus and exhibits traits like foreheads and chins considered characteristic of homo sapiens.

The remains, dating to about 1.7 million years ago, were found in a tell, a debris mound of the kind buit up by long term and permanent occupation of a site characteristic of village culture.
