Preparing for house decoration

We (thats the "Royal we") have decided to decorate the the hall and lounge. Ok it's not that bad could get away with a touch up here and there, but as there is nothing better to do this weekend, why not.
We prefer painted walls.
So out to buy paint spent about 2 hours "choosing" with no particular success so picked up a fistfull of paint charts. We (er she) had a favourite colour fair enough, so returning home it turned it is only a shade or 2 different from the current one (and we have enough left over from last redecoration to re do the paintwork). This debate will continue no doubt for some time, does everyone have this hassle I wonder?

I would be careful with old paint, depending on how old it is the color may now be different because of pigments sinking to the bottom. It depends on how well the pigments mix into the paint again when you stir it before painting.
