The Playstation one processor - the MIPS RS3000 is used as the Playstation 2's IOP - Input Output Processor.
When it boots a PS1 cd, the whole Ps1 chipset is actually embedded in this one core. The old GTE is enabled and the EE(Emotion Engine) is disabled.
The EE is the PS2's actual core. The IOP however is used to boot and handle BIOS(Basic Input Output System) functions.
I work with these boxes - so I know a fair it about their operation.
