A couple of points about the above:

Weren't the original licencing laws introduced in WWI to curb the alcohol intake of munitions workers, not WWII?

Original Mon - Sat opening hours were 11am - 3pm & 6pm - 11pm, in the North East anyway, if not nationwide. Sundays were 12pm - 3pm & 7pm - 10.30pm.

Some (local?) laws allowed seaside pubs to open at 5.30pm during summer. Newcastle city centre pubs could also open at this earlier time.

When 11am - 11pm drinking was first allowed during the week, Sunday afternoons were originally extended by an hour until 3pm before finally becoming all day as well.

This is one of the problems with the countrys alcohol laws, they're so confusing!
