April 1516 - Reinheitsgebot (Law on puriy).

Probably the oldest law about food still in power.

Nothing but water, malted barley, yeast and hops.

EU law overrode it some years ago, claiming that not being allowed to camouflage chemistry as beer would spoil foreign breweries´ sales in Germany...had the reverse effect. Nobody here will buy anything but the real stuff. And laws are a safety measure - if the label states "Gebraut nach dem Reinheitsgebot von 1516" they are not allowed to cheat.
