h2g2 on the move with the 7110e....

After several failed attempts (user error) I have finally successfully connected to h2g2, first mistake mispelling vodafone (phone) and then missing the point with the password, having read throught it finally sank in.

Just need to find some time to find my way around the guide!

Mr DG. I to have a 7110 but alas have not found away to access and contribute to discussions using it. If you find a way to do this it would be really great if you could let me in on it!

Shaggy!

Mr Shaggy, you didn't mention which network you were on (I self have just taken up with orange),I take it you have followed the instructions implicitly, which was the point I was trying to make, having read through them several times, i went back to re-read them today and was successful.

I am also with Orange (more like complete bunch of Lemons!). I have my phone set up with H2G2 saved as a book mark rather than a home page and it works fine...I think! I'm still hoping it will improve though!

Ah ha Mr Shaggy, I see where you are coming from now, I will indeed try to work out how to add to discussions and if successful will let you know the secret!

Until then I guess follow the good books advice and Don't Panic!

Or as your namesake would do, follow someone who looks like they know where they are going and you'll more than likely end up where you didn't know you needed to be!

I'm not convinced that the 7110e exists. Here's the evidence:

I had the first 2 weeks of April off work, and spent a lot of that time wandering into Orange shops and Carphone warehouses to be told "Well, we had some in this morning, but we've sold them all".

2 weeks ago today, the 7110e finally appeared on the Orange website. I ordered it over the phone (as you can't do a number port over the web) for a 48 hour delivery. So far, what I've been told is that: a) the courier lost it, we'll send you another; b) I don't know why it wasn't sent yesterday; c) It's been redirected for a Tuesday delivery; d) Orange put the wrong postcode on it, you'll get it tomorrow; e) It's definitely on a van and you'll have this morning; f) I don't know why you didn't get it on Saturday; g) It's definitely on a van and you'll have this morning.

There's 20 minutes left of this morning, and once again I'm certain it's not coming. So, having never seen this phone, I'm coming to the conclusion that Orange have claimed to have stock of it before they really have so that I won't sogn up with Cellnet or Vodaphone (whoch I'm now seriously considering).

Sorry about the rant, but the point is supposed to be that I agree with you, Shaggy in your opinion of Orange as a company. It's not the delivery problems themselves (these things happen, and I've just been unlucky this time that a few problems have occurred at once); it's the fact that Oranges sales team haven't taken any interest in me after they'd got my money. I had to fight really hard for the above-listed bits of disinformation.

Me again. *Everybody ducks for cover*

I'd like to take back some of the above, as the phone has arrived. It's sitting at home, charging, and of course it remains to be seen whether the thing works or not....

I've heard a rumour that the reason Orange's 7110s take so long to arrive is that Orange require them to be reprogrammed somehow to work with their service. Since the end result is a phone with default WAP settings that restrict you to Orange's private network of WAP sites, I'm not sure that it's worth their bother!

I'm glad to see fellow WAP users with as much cynicism as I. G, best of luck setting your phone up, don't listen to orange too much as half of them haven't got a clue!!!

*Shaggy remembers times of traumer in getting WAP phone to bloody well work!!!!*

Let me know how you get on, I'm off now to solve the worlds poverty and chaos problems (it's easier than setting up a 7110e!)

Well, it seems to be working ok. I just read an article and posted a (very short) journal entry using Orange's defualt settings and with h2g2 as a bookmark. Adam, you're right - the Orange number only seems to work if you have them set as a homepage. I don't think it's a problem though as you can easily start at a bookmark without having to visit your home page.

The 7110e went out of stock for a few months (a long time to hold your breath, believe me) while they sorted out some bugs in the original release. Perhaps they tidied up their connection settings at the same time, which is why I haven't had a problem.

BTW, it seems like quite a useful phone, too. I enjoyed downloading all my contact numbers from my Palm IIIxe rather than typing them in, and Nokia's user interface is far superior to the one on the Ericcson 768 that I'm looking forward to throwing away.

OK, now everyone has sorted out h2g2 with the Nokia 7110, can anyone help me with connecting on a Mitsubishi Trium WAP phone on BTCellnet? I'm getting "Unsupported Content" messages!!!
Cheers.....

I've found and fixed a problem caused by the WAP gateway that BT Cellnet use.

Previously anyone connecting to h2g2 from a Nokia 7110 (or a Mitsubishi Trium) via BT's WAP gateway would see Unsupported Content errors just trying to access the front page. This was due to the WAP gateway lying about the capabilities of the phone smiley - sadface

The site is now more careful about the content it sends to each phone, but this problem could occur again as new phones are launched and the gateway continues lying...

I'll try and keep on top of new phones, but if you find your new phone has problems with BT Cellnet's gateway which magically disappear when you switch to using another gateway then please tell me!

Guys, I have just seen (in T3) the new next generation of mobiles, *Shaggy smiles wantingly*

They look very cool, and are vitually all screen so they can support graphics and the like! If you get the chance to flick though it is worth a look!

Oh and if you are on Orange you can now order your shopping at Waitrose via your phone!!!!

Roll on the next next generation of mobile gizzets!

I've made some changes in the last few days that fix some problems accessing h2g2 from BT Cellnet. h2g2 should now work with the standard BT Cellnet settings - just input mobile.h2g2.com as a URL and everything should be fine...
