I said I like cats, not cataracts!!
BMT Started conversation Jul 13, 2009
Over the last 4 to 6 weeks I'd started to notice a somewhat odd but rapid change in my vision. From needing glasses to both read and use the PC I found I no longer needed either. However I noticed my distance vision, while still ok, I was getting a combination of either slightly blurred or double vision. For example, looking at text on the TV, (a 26" Flat Screen), was blurred or I was seeing 2 of everything when sat at normal distance from said TV, if I got to within 18" to 2' from the screen all was well.
I had my annual eye test today and mentioned this to the optician. Added to which I was having a problem with bright light as well. My optician said before even starting the tests she suspected cataracts. Sure enough within a matter of minutes, cataracts diagnosed.
I'm now seeing the Doctor on Monday next who will arrange a referral to a specialist. In the meantime I'm to have glasses that will sort the initial blurring and double vision. The optician did the Driving Standards test, actually, she did 3 tests. First one eye, then the other then both together. Fortunately all ok on that front, passed no problem and again the new glass's will be a help as well.
Just have to wait now till I see the doc and subsequent specialist as and when.

My dad had two OPs on cataracts last year. It should all go fine when you hav to have an op, it's a standard OP for eyes.

Hi Bel, whilst the op itself is pretty much routine, the concern for me from the medical side is the underlying heart problems and the high levels of meds I'm on. They're very reluctant when it comes to general anesthetic [sp].
I'll have to wait and see I guess when I see the specialist.
Ta GB, roll on Hull. I'll still be there.

I don't think they do a general anaesthesia for cataract ops, but a local one. I'd have to ask my dad, though.

ST, I have a suspicion Bel might be right.
Sorry to hear you are having problems, but it sounds as if it could be a lot worse. Wondered where you had got to, as I hadn't heard from you since you said you were going to Middleton. Thought perhaps you were very busy.
Did you go in the end? So sorry we couldn't be there, but weekends are impossible.
Hope all goes well, take care,

Hi' no it can be a lot of things ,but you should really check it out because i get it and it's pressure on the nerve or it can be a heart prob i know because of the test's they gave before an answer came.
but best of luck.

Just found this:
<>
Not sure if that is a comfort or not, but what I read is all very positive. I learnt a bit too, as I have cloudiness at the bottom of my eyes, which is not affecting me - yet.

Just done some research myself via our NHS website. It is done under a local these days so that takes a lot of the heart probs out of the equation. I'll wait and see what the specialist says as to whether it needs doing sooner rather than later. The new glasses will sort things for now at least.

They will only do one at once, yes? how will you cope? I guess you'll not be able to drive with one eye patched.
Hull meet isn't until a week on Saturday, Webby

If you're going to have an eyepatch, even temporarily, does anyone have a parrot you could borrow? It seems a shame not to get maximum effect out of the situation.
Nonsense aside - good luck with the cataracts. As everyone's said already, they're relatively simple to deal with these days.

Do I?
Nobody knows what accent I've got - no matter where I go, even in Hull, I get "You're not from round here, are you?"
We digress - - Sorry to hear about the problems, ST - from what I hear, it is curable. The Gran-in-law used to have them, and they sorted her out without much difficulty.
