Greetings,
WAP is great, if you have a WAP-GSM.
Almost all mobiles can do SMS (both sent and receive), why not look at SMS?
A 'h2g2-search' via SMS (sent key-word via SMS, and receive query-result from H@G@ back via SMS).
Just an idea.

Of course we could all get a daily h2g2 sms to keep us going till some wap phones actually arrive in the uk in reasonable quantities.
But who's going to pay for the SMS?

We do in fact have an SMS service that works in the test version pretty much how you described. We're working on a way not to use our precious resources sending SMS messages as you've identified.

What you could do is get someone with an Orange pay-as-you-go phone, where sending SMS messages is free until March. But I suppose it would take a while to enter the Guide using the keypad on a mobile phone.
