I assume one can change one's nickname if one likes, but does that mean that if I were to pick something egregiously long, I would have to type all of it in every time I logged on? And how do I change it in the first place? *is feeling small and mononomenclated*

You can only change your visible nickname, not your username. Therefore, although other people would see your new nickname displayed, your username would remain unchanged, and you would log in in exactly the same way!

Your nickname and your username are not the same thing (although it is possible to use the same for both).
Your username is what you use to log on with.
Your nickname is what shows up to people here on h2g2.
For example, right now my nickname here on h2g2 is:
"Mikey the Humming Mouse - A1355195 Hitchhike your way into the Edited Guide!"
My username, on the other hand, is only one word.
To change your nickname, click on the button on the left that says "Preferences" or click on this: <./>UserDetails</.>
Hope this helps!

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
