Well, I think this is one of the many things that confuse new researchers (I'm the Muse of Confusion, so I ought to know!)
There is of course the GuideML Clinic, but even that might be a bit daunting to someone who doesn't know anything about closing tags or HTML or... (I know I didn't when I first joined)
So - I thought I'd start a conversation where we can post links to entries that might be useful. I'll go first... (obviously)
