Thank you for all the gen - I must admit to being a little concerned that the age of most, if not all the other perps of this keyboard abuse, would view me as a museum piece. esp given all the smilies - which I hate.
Rant follows:
I appreciate they offer an easy shortcut, but they're all in such poor taste they're akin to the worst kind of slang. So it's more like laziness than time saving that's the main motivation for their use. They're spreading like a virus too. Pictograms of different species I could happily accept.
I must try a chinese symbol againt/out of an illust/design, or the like, just to see what a well designed alphabet of "smilies" could look like.
Tell me I'm not alone! (rhetoric - back later)

Nice to get such a prompt reply & yes *sigh* well, I suppose the smileys do add some colour as well as being somewhat useful in conveying the tone of a comment(sarchasm, etc.) Bit of a gimmic mate - visual or as they say, eye candy. No need to quote your number.
