Theatrical plays have been shocking people for centuries. It's part of their job, I think. Even in a musical like "My Fair Lady," there are quite a few uses of "D*mn". "South Pacific" is full of swears, because Oscar Hammerstein II tried to get authentic sailor language for his libretto. He interviewed some real sailors to get an idea of their vocabulary.
In the late 1960s,the musical "Hair" had a nude scene. There was also a play about Che Guevara that had the bathroom right on the stage!

And do not forget the written word!!
Such shockers as 'Fanny Hill', 'Lady Chatterley's Lover', 'Ulysses', and the grandaddy or them all, Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales'.

Granted, some of them seem downright wacky. Take "Red Badge of Courage." The boy actually wanted to get himself hurt in the war, so he would have a scar to show that he had shown courage under fire.
