We astronomers do not use SI units, we use cgs (centimeters, grams, seconds) units, because it really doesn't matter. The benefit of cgs units is that the electrostatic constant is 1.

to answer an early question in this rather old thread over what is the purpose of AUs, since the nearest solar system is so far away - I think AUs exist for the purpose of in-solar-system things, such as here to Jupiter
