As a follow up to my cry for help at F19585?thread=2260855 I though I'd come here.

How is it that this term pops up in a list of classical monsters in Italo Calvino's "Invisible Cities"? Why was it there?

More importantly, where had Italo Calvino heard of this creature before? What's it come from?

Most importantly, why hasn't ANYONE ELSE ON THE PLANET heard of this thing?! The only references I can find come from this one book, and from an AD&D monster manual that Google pointed me towards.

As a lover of obscure monsters and myths, this is driving me absolutely bonkers! I've never had this much trouble researching the definition of a single word before.
