Anyone know of any volunteer abroad programs that offer any form of income!?? ... I've heard rumors that they exist, but the ones I have found are either somewhere I'm not terribly thrilled to explore, or, they are for commitments that are more lenghty than I consider manageable at this time.
Locations I am most interested in: Thailand, Ghana, Brazil and Peru.
Length of stay: 1-2 weeks.
Cheers!!!

Paid to volunteer?
Nope...although I suppose some well-known organizations would provide accommodation, meals, etc. I doubt it'd include a salary.
I could be wrong though.

LOL... thanks, GB...
there are rumors of such programs, and I found two...
But they aren't my cup of tea!!!
I think I'm ruling out Peru in favor of Ecuador, because hiking a volcano interests me more than seeing Machu Pichu (I think I'm a little stubborn about buildings, having been to England...).
YEEEHAH!!!!

Shorty just applied for something called a Bonner Scholarship, which is given out to a few worthy candidates who have a history of volunteerism. As far as I know, it's only available to college students though, and the recipients really don't make very much at all from it. (No idea if she'll get it or not, most of the available scholarships are also tied to FAFSA and College Board based financial need determination.)
Apparently the Bonner family (whoever they were *shrug*) believed very strongly in community service, and wanted to make sure that at least a few college students who enjoyed volunteer work wouldn't have to choose between making much needed money for college expenses and the volunteer work that they enjoy.
I have no idea if there might be some other plans available to help college graduates who need money but enjoy volunteer work.

I know a couple people here from the midwest who have volunteered to go abroad and teach english to students. They get paid for the trip but I think it's a minimun of 6 weeks. They also pay for your food and board. Lots of countries to choose from. I don't know what program it's through though, but I do know that you don't have to be a licensed teacher or even in a teaching program to go.
That probably doesn't help you much does it?

I could ask my mum to look for things in Brasil if you want to, she knows quite a lot of people there... she's only coming back from Mexico next week though, so it might take a while.

YAY!!!
Because I bought the book found here: http://www.delayingtherealworld.com/fellowship/index.html
I have all sorts of opportunities opening up. I found one place:
http://www.volunteer.org.nz/ecuador/
that is just about a *third* of the cost of the previous Ecuador experience (organic community farm) we were planning on.
We!??.... Yes... myself and two friends... one male, one female.
So I'm excited. One of my friends knows a woman who started a school in Ghana, so we're planning to enjoy her hospitality in exchange for helping her with her school.
Bloody brilliant, isn't it!??
