Better to Burn Out than to Fade Away!!!!
Dragonfly. "A poet can survive everything but a misprint"-- Oscar Wilde Started conversation Aug 25, 2003
All right, gang. I'm in the beginning of my second week of the fall semester, and I don't mind attending the classes and participating in class. But Great Zeus, most of the time, I'm not feeling like doing the outside work.
Ok. So the reading for my Travel Writing studio right now is poetry. And not the sort that rhymes or seems to really focus on meter. So I'm not liking that. It all seems to be one run-on sentence. One poem goes from page 96-115.
And one of my two history texts IS as boring as it sounds. The other one's pretty good. From it I have learned that the Native Americans cross-bred grasses for possibly thousands of years to create corn. Now that's COOL!!!
And the nutrition course isn't half bad.
I just think that maybe I didn't get enough of a rest after the summer course-- I had two weeks away, and I was busy with Ian. This is also my final academic year, and I want out.
In short, I want to be calling more of the shots (who doesn't?). I've spoiled myself a bit by writing and finishing my own book. I'd LOVE to work on more and more... but... oh, what's keeping me from it, really!!??
I'm afraid I won't get done what needs to be done, afraid I won't have sufficient down time. So what, huh!?? I'm young!?? I'm being stubborn with myself. I'm unsure just what to do.
I thought I had a shot at graduating with honors-- a GPA (grade point average) of 3.88 (4.0 is perfect). I have a 3.58, but because I failed two courses my very first semester, there's no way I can get that 3.88, even if I retake those courses and earn B's.
Ok. Also, I am putting forth a lot of energy to contribute to my school paper, and I'm in the process of preparing for a bigger piece to submit to a bigger Denver weekly paper. So those are good projects for me, and I am calling some of the shots in that realm.
::shrugs:: I used to pace myself very well. Maybe I pushed myself too hard!?? Dunno...
Roll on May 2004.

Hey D
Know how you mean about wanting to get it all over and done with. It was really hard for me when most of my friends (third years) left this year to get on with their lives and I'm kinda stuck still with another to do. STill got some friends though, and I guess Andy doesn't live *too* far away... unless he gets accepted by the army that is
Hows the book applications going?

When I was in college in the 1960s, graduating
with honors meant that you were selected for the
honors program (usually based on your grades in
your sophomore or junior year), and you wrote
an extra thesis or something.
There was also cum laude, which went from 3.0 to 3.39,
magna cum laude, which was from 3.4 to 3.69, and
summa cum laude, which was 3.7 and above.
There were also the honor societies such as Phi Beta Kappa,
and Phi Kappa Phi.
I didn't bother with the honors program. I was at the top of the
cum laude range, and I got Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi.
None of these distinctions has mattered much since then,
though they were useful in getting into good graduate schools.

Sounds like you're ready to move on, D.
Going back to school was difficult for me, because I loved to learn, but hated the extra "outside" work involved in being there! There was a lovely lady I met that's retired who was attending school for the fun of it! The State University of New York system has a great plan that lets seniors go to school for free. Not to earn degrees or take tests or anything, but just to learn. I'd love to do that!

OOO... yes, I want to move on. I want different assignments. I'm getting into this newspaper writing thing. People keep asking if I'm a journalism major, and I'm not cringing at it half as much as I used to (no offense, but I'm a fiction writer; a different entity!!!).
I have ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT to read now. Second time in my college career. There's a 3-5 page paper involved in this one. The first time, it was assigned, but never used in class.
All my lovely friends

Nice, abbi!!! Thanks.
They all became ghosts in the end in Remarque's book, Pauly, if you ask me... but they seem very alive to me...

I read "Birdsong" a few years ago. It was also
set during World War I, with some flash-forwards
to the 1980s. It underscored how difficult it would
be for people in our era to even imagine the horrors
of being in that war. There were people who dug tunnels
under enemy lines for the purpose of setting off
explosives. They *knew* there were tunnels being
dug by the enemy for the same purpose.

I'm terribly sorry, D ... I have to unsubscribe from this conversation. Every time I see it in my conversation list, it puts that song in my head, and I can't stand it anymore!

Dragonfly, when you say "horrific,"
do you mean "All quiet" or "birdsong?"

Thanks for the clarification, Dragonfly.
The horrible suffering and deprivations of that
war were soon overshadowed by World War II.
"Burden of Desire" and "Birdsong" are a couple of relatively
recent books that tried to recapture some of the flavor
of that time.
In 1998, there was an 80th anniversary commemoration
of the end of the war. It took place in Belgium. Queen
Elizabeth was there, along with a handful of surviving
veterans of that war. Almost all the survivors were
100 years old or older. There was speculation that the
90th anniversary, in 2008, will see no survivors, at least
not any able to attend..
