How broadly does one define sentience? for instance, dolphins are obviously not tool-users, which has often been considered a requirement.

Of COURSE dolphins are sentient. We may spend all our lives mucking about in the sea having a good time instead of mastering the black arts of tool using, but why would we need stuff like fire and wheels anyway?
