Yep, you're pretty spot on on most of this, even if it is a cliche.
Little Geography lesson, I know that by American you mean the USA, but "North America" includes Canada and Mexico at least, and then there's "South America". Might as well get the labels right if you're going to paint the USA with such a broad brush.
Strangely, a lot of its laws were based on English law, and the idea of royalty (in the olden days) taking wealth for favors was not the least bit unknown. Your rant, though valid, has been taking place in all major powers, and all through history. It just seems to be the Yanks turn to be in the bullseye.
Daimler Chrysler, for example, has just been found to be carrying secret bank accounts to be used for purposes of bribery in various countries. No difference there, in my book, to the pay for play politics of the USA.
All these things go through cycles though. The old top-dog was the "military-industrial complex"; now it's consumerism and corporationism. In between, great gains were made there in social reform and an leveling of power between people and corporations. The litigisness of the USA populace had abused this some, so it is swinging back to corporate protectionistic policies.
Good luck with the rants. They do a body good.

Hey there!
I hope that noone takes offense. I know that I wouldn't. Opinions are the only things that really matter (other than facts, of course), for without opinions, there can be no valuable interchange of ideas and options.
Don't ever stop ranting (even at 1am) on my account. It may not be what the guide is intended for at its most basic level, but I love that it's allowed and possible to diverge from the 'plan' now and again.
I've got a couple of rants myself; and who cares if anyone agrees, they're my rants!
Have a great week, but get some sleep too!

It's not even suitable for the AWW. Seconded.
