Entry: UPDATE: Renaissance Art - A Matter of Perspective - A87981015
Author: Tavaron da Quirm - Arts Editor - U1314679

This is an update for the first Entry I have ever written for h2g2: A8249899
In fact it is almost a complete rewrite and I took out all things about architecture and made a separate Entry from that: A87981024

Yes... I know it didn't get any shorter, even through splitting smiley - erm but there was so much to say...

Well done - I like the extra detail about the different arts smiley - ok

Very educational about the monumental statues not being perfectly proportioned so as to look perfect from below.

Don't forget Footnote 2 smiley - winkeye

Is egg tempera more like watercolour, where it just turns into a muddy colour if you try to paint another layer on top of it?

What technique did Jan Van Eyck use to enable him to paint microscopic detail?

Excellent ending - neatly sets the scene for the next era smiley - ok

So... I can't quite answer your question about tempera but it is definitely very different from watercolor painting. With tempera you can only paint very thin layers of color which appear translucent. You have to paint multiple layers above each other to achieve the color you want. The paint has to be applied in short strokes. You can obviously not just 'color in' a large area. Also the color of the fresh paint is often significantly different from the color of the dry paint. The paints get unuseable rather fast after mixing and crack easily on flexible surfaces (like canvas)

I can try to write a footnote with this information?

Sorry it's taken me ages to get back to this...

Thanks for the footnote - that explains the differences clearly smiley - ok

I can visualise it particularly well now, because I recently saw a series of photos of a painting, and there was a yellow tinge to everything at first, but it turned much brighter and bluer when it dried smiley - ok

Yes, that image was OK for the BBC, but we can do better smiley - ok

As this is an update, it will be applied directly rather than being sent to a Sub-editor, so I will give it a thorough readthrough just now smiley - ok

There are a few places where US English should be changed to UK English; " anymore" - "any more", "center" - "centre", "color" - "colour", "meters" - "metres"

"This lead to a raising importance of sciences" - "This led to a rising importance of science"

"the only possible progress in arts" - "the only possible progress in art" or "the only possible progress in the arts"?

" a rebirth of antique qualities and especially going back to naturalistic pictures and sculptures." - " a rebirth of antique qualities, especially a return to naturalistic pictures and sculptures."?

"grammar(writing)" - "grammar (writing)"

"A very important person for arts theory was the architect Leon Battista Alberti. His writings on painting, sculpture and architecture were the theoretical foundation of art in the Renaissance." - I think I understand this, but I'm not sure - could it be changed to something like, "The architect Leon Battista Alberti was very important; his writings on painting, sculpture and architecture were the theoretical foundation of art in the Renaissance."?

You could maybe link to A2811502 Mathematics in the Arts

"Della pittura" - I think that should be in italics

"tried to each donate" - "each tried to donate"

"symbolizing that the new burgeousie is a sucessor of the Roman Republic." - "symbolising that the new bourgeoisie was a successor of the Roman Republic."

"among them the first life sized bronze statue since antiquity." - "among them the first life-sized bronze statues since antiquity."?

"figures standing with most of their weight on one leg" - Figures

" Therefore statues are often distorted so they look correct for a viewer standing below them, looking up." - " Therefore, statues are often distorted so they look correct for a viewer standing below them and looking up."

"Sculputes" - "Sculptures"

"a tradition which already started in the late Gothic period" - "a tradition that had already started in the late Gothic period"

"Reliefs4attained" - is there a space missing there?

"comemorating" - "commemorating"

"In northern Europe altar pieces made of linden wood were one of the most important expressions of skulptural arts but with the Reformation and its abolishion of pictures this came to a sudden end." - "In northern Europe altar pieces made of linden wood were one of the most important expressions of sculptural art but, with the Reformation and its abolition of pictures, this came to a sudden end."

"conjouring" - "conjuring"

Footnote 5: " With tempera you can only paint very thin layers of colour, which appear translucent. You have to paint multiple layers above each other to achieve the colour you want. The paint has to be applied in short strokes. You can obviously not just 'colour in' a large area. Also the colour of the fresh paint is often significantly different from the colour of the dry paint. The paints become unuseable rather fast after mixing, and crack easily on flexible surfaces like canvas."

Just need a full stop at the end of Footnote 6, or you could maybe put the name in brackets after Masaccio, as you do for Raphael.

"pictures of monumental scales" - "pictures at monumental scales"?

" religious dissension and Peasants' Revolt " - " religious dissension and the Peasants' Revolt "

"did start later and took different shapes than in Italy." - "started later and took different shapes from that in Italy."

"perspectivically correct drawing" - "perspective drawing"?

"liveley" - "lively"

"depction" - "depiction"

"books which relied " - "books that relied "

I wonder if it would be better to put the full names in brackets after the first mention of Titian, Giorgione and Tintoretto, rather than in the next paragraph.

"painted by a Fleming in the Renaissance, it was 'Hunters in the Snow'" - the comma , should be a semicolon ;

"Oil painting was improved by the Dutch painter Jan van Eyck. By using oil paint instead of tempera" - Oil paint was invented or introduced by the Dutch painter Jan van Eyck?

"This style conveyed the power of the Catholic Church in the Counter-Reformation, and during the 17th Century spread throughout Europe." - "This style conveyed the power of the Catholic Church in the Counter-Reformation and, during the 17th Century, spread throughout Europe."

Excellent smiley - ok

I just found a few more things for you to check:

"viewer standing below them and looking up Sculptures" - needs a full stop before Sculptures

"equistrian sculptures of important military persona" - "equestrian sculptures of important military personages"?

"The whole Renaissance art was influenced by a Dutch invention" - The whole of Renaissance art

"Some were distributed in large quantities, others were reserved for small numbers of collectors." - the comma should be a semicolon?

Great work smiley - magic
