I was pondering this some more (I really want to make one, but even £8 is a bit expensive, really...) and had a thought...

Is the key thing about fleece that it doesn't fray when it is cut? So an old duvet cover wouldn't work for this because you would have to hem each cut edge first?

Here you can get cheap fleece blankets for as little as 2 Euros in some furniture stores. We once bought some for the dog.
