BR: Cannot amend or delete Journal entries

pebblederook-The old guy wearing surfer beads- what does he think he looks like?

As the title says. Even when I click 'delete this entry' the machine whirrs and reports deletion completed and underneath is a warning that I cannot delete another users journal entry.

Having read through the FAQ's I am getting an impression that Journal entries are undeletable except in exceptional circumstances but I wonder then why the delete this journal entry option is available, although it appears only in some skins so perhaps it is a legacy option that is no longer available?

I cannot even amend these entries.

And if journal entries cannot be deleted or amended I think a rather large warning to this effect ought to be prominently displayed.

'We all lead interesting lives, and your Journal is the place to tell everyone exactly what makes your days buzz by. Here you can talk about what you're thinking of doing, what you think about what you're thinking of doing, and when you're thinking of doing it, because, unlike Guide Entries, Journal Entries are associated with specific points in time.

Think of your Journal as your personal diary. If you want to preserve your writing in a more permanent format you might like to create a Guide Entry, but remember that everything you write is always part of the Guide, and other visitors to your page can still read what you've said, and discuss it.'

I get this at the top of the page when I go to add an journal entry

Do you Peb? Or think it needs re-wording?

There isn't an option to delete or amend your journal entries but I can remove them my space into my conservations, where they can die a death.

I wonder if you can unsub from there and where it would go if no-one else was subbed to it?

Anyway, I notice that I have removed journal entries in goo and that has moved them out of my journal space in goo but not in Pliny

Thanks peanut for your reply. Apart from thinking that my journal entries were a little silly, I don't have any great problem with them surviving to the end of time, and being aware that they do will refrain from adding any more after a fine meal and a good bottle of wine.

Some observations;
In brunel, classic goo, plain & alabaster there is the option to remove but it doesn't do anything, merely informing you:
Request to Remove Journal Entry Completed
You can't unsubscribe from another person's Journal

In pliny the option to remove is missing.

Brunel, and I guess some of the other skins, display the message you refer to but Pliny does not, which is where I live. I can appreciate that journal entries are essentially conversation topics and are being treated by the programming in the same way, non editable and non deletable.

I have switched to classic goo but cannot see how one would move a journal entry into conversations. Have I misunderstood your post? This is not a problem, as I say above I have no pressing reason to kill them.

A grown up will come along soon and help you properly smiley - biggrin

In goo as it appears on my page beneath my journal entry is

'click here to remove this journal entry from your space'

when I do that it goes from my personal space and I get this message

This Journal Entry has been removed from your Personal Space. It has not been deleted, however, as it may form part of a Conversation that other Researchers have joined in. You can reinstate your Journal Entry on your Space by following the instructions in the Journal section of the h2g2 FAQ (click on the 'Help!' button to find the FAQ).

which I will do later smiley - laugh

I *thought* that the journal entry moved to your conversation list, I could be wrong and it like unsubbing so perhaps just it stays on other people lists if it has been part of a conservation. smiley - erm

Hi pebblederook, sorry for the late reply, I had a few days off smiley - smiley

It is true that you can't delete or edit journal entries I'm afraid. They're more like a first post in a forum than an entry, and as such they're not editable.

The moderators and a couple of other volunteers have access to tools to remove content if it's deemed to break the house rules, or if a case can be made for it (such as accidentally giving out a real name, or a phone number) though, so if you have a need for something to be removed, just Yikes it to bring it to the moderators attention. smiley - smiley

Thanks again peanut. I am happy enough to leave the entries as they are and merely put a post it note on my computer banning me from accessing my journal space after ingesting three or more units of inspiration juice smiley - biggrin

Might be mine actually, pebblederook smiley - ale

As Pastey said, if you want to remove a journal entry completely, you'd need to yikes it and let us know why you want it gone. smiley - ok

I'm not really here

The message that it's deleted is not really correct. What you are doing is removing it from your personal space, and unsubscribing from it. So that's the only way to unsubscribe from your own journals. So if you do remove it from your space, it won't appear in your conversation list because you've unsubscribed. But everyone else subscribed will still see it, and might well continue contributing.

I think the wording was changed in Brunel to make it a bit more clear, but I can't remember that far back now.

We're also changing the functionality, not just the wording. Although it takes time to roll everything through to live.

Thanks smiley - cheers

Is that an option that is not going to be available in Pliny?

It's not an option, it's something that the moderators can do.

Sorry, I didn't mean the option to delete or edit I meant the remove/unsub option smiley - smiley

You've always been able to unsub.

In goo when I remove my journal entry, it removes the entry from my journal space and unsubs me the conversation

In Pliny it seems that I can be unsubbed from the conservation but it is still in my journal space, I don't know my way round Pliny so am I doing something wrong?

We don't support the older skins anymore, other than making sure they still work. And Goo, being the eldest, doesn't have some of the functionality that skins like Brunel have.

Basically, it may or may not do something.

goo is fine smiley - cheers

In Pliny it doesn't appear to remove the journal entry from your journal space which goo does, and was enquiring if that is a function that Pliny won't have in the future or if it one that it doesn't have at the moment smiley - smiley
