Community Volunteers - a h2g2 History
h2g2 Community Editors Started conversation Jun 23, 2011
Over the years, quite a few people have written histories of h2g2. It's something that newbies ask for quite regularly, especially when we start talking in jargon (like 'Rupert', or nighthoover).
Could we organise either a h2g2 history Entry/page, or organise a place where the histories of various h2g2 events are collated together?

Speaking of jargon, I started a glossary a little while ago and y'all can find it here : http://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AjLzN9TeL8kWdGt4VS1mTnVpS2R4VHVKdHNVVENySEE&hl=en_US&authkey=CISf9dkB#gid=0

Good idea Vip.
Lanza and I are working on a h2 Traditions and Customs entry.
I think a place to collate various histories already in existence is a good idea too. Maybe we can drop the links in this thread as a start.

With all the old slopey ones turning up I thought a write up of who they are and when they were here etc would be nice.

Jargon?
Only tonight a newbie asked me for an interpretation of h2g2 Jargon. I gave this link: A632431

I'd like to see an h2g2 calendar showing the days of the year that specific events had happened. I'm thinking of things like the first post in the No! No! No! thread, or the day Natalie joined or the day Mu Beta stuck blutac in his belly button. Those sorts of things.
Then we could have a "this day in hootoo-history" feature with a link to whatever it was.

Oooh, that's exciting. I found the Tony Curtis stuff last night, and have started on the Halloween Anagrams, so I'll start a list of 'first dates'.
Looks like we've got an h2 History project I should be careful though, as there's lots of work to be done.
I enjoy trawling old threads and finding stuff, so am happy to research on things if other people can help some of the writing up.

Yeah. That sort of stuff. Exactly. *beams*
Who wants to volunteer to collate this? Don't all shout at once, you can all do it if you like...

I'm happy to start putting it all in one place. There's an A page here now: A85857961
Anyone feel free to drop ideas and links in this thread or on that page and I'll sort them out a bit. That way they'll all be in one place as and when someone wants to write something up.
I suggest that we have a series of projects eg the traditions and customs one, the calendar one, the jargon one, the past histories (a bunch of them): Who were the Italics; the h2g2 wars; the history of the EG, that kind of thing) etc.

Cool.
I need to add some stuff from this thread, so if anyone feels like something has been left out just nudge me as I'll still be getting round to it.

Hi Kea
I started on this about a year ago, with the idea of doing one year at a time. It took me about a full weeks work to do 2005, which as it was spread over evenings and coffee breaks, took about two months.
So I figured I was never going to get it done and left it there.
It is a good idea though, so feel free to use the 2005 page, and count on me for help if we can find a workable way of doing it.
Will post to the page you set up as well,
cheers,
sprout

I still like the idea of organising it as a calendar - then anyone could potentially add things to the different dates, and we could have a feature on the FP - "this day in hootoo history..."
But I've no intention of getting down and dirty and actually DO it you understand!

Ben, http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/F21554190?thread=8245343 I see it as a slow project that can run in the background until we have enough days to make a calendar.

Thanks Sprout, that's wonderful. I think there are a couple of threads in Ask too where people talking about h2g2 history. I'm sure we can pull a whole bunch of stuff together, and it's so good to have people involved who've already worked out some of the processes

"…will help whoever collates this"
I thought that was you, kea. But I'll be happy to help. I've meant to do it for years, but of course as a member of A431911, well…
But as you say, it's not urgent. Lots of other more important things to get done first.
