If you want a truly liberating belly laugh, go google Amazon reviews of 'The Man in the High Castle'.

No, NOT the series. The BOOK.

Because Amazon was releasing the TV series (and what I've seen of it so far is fun, at least for me), they put out an ebook version of the classic novel.

Which, as you may remember, is by Philip K Dick. Dick the visionary. Dick the underappreciated. Dick the certifiable nutcase.

One reader wailed, 'Was this man on DRUGS?'

Yes, madam, he was. More often than he wasn't.

'Was he consulting the I Ching while writing?'

Well, duh. He claimed that was how he wrote the darn thing. Worse than a Ouija board, if you ask me.

Okay, it's really unfair. Unleashing PKD on an unsuspecting, normal human populace like that. Just before Christmas, too. Their wails of bafflement, their (fully justified) complaints about the plot, or lack thereof, the weird syntax, the just-plain-weirdness of it all...

Ah, yes, sir and madam, but for 1962, PKD was ahead of his time. Well, maybe not in Berkeley, but the rest of us had some catching up to do.

People baffled by Philip K Dick. A TV show in which the Nazis give suspects LSD...

Ah...

It's almost like the good old days. Far out.

PS Reading PKD can be a liberating experience, but don't expect it to make sense. At least, not all at once.

PKD was a great, and very prolific writer. But you can definitely tell which stories he wrote while "under the influence" smiley - winkeye

I remember having read 'Beyond lies the Wub' once (thanks to your recommendation, Dmitri). I quite liked it.

I didn't read TMitHC, but I watched the series. Naturally, I have no idea how closely it follows the book, but that tv series is stunning. What a very scary thought!

It's not that close to the book, but you can see glimpses of Dick's world here. And I agree, it's an impressive series. smiley - smiley
